Broadway Limited Imports is proud to introduce our new models of the Boston & Maine T1a and T1b 2-8-4 Berkshire locomotives. In the 1920's, in stiff competition with the Boston & Albany, the B&M was looking for better motive power to handle the stiff grades across the hills of Massachusetts.
Often called the largest steam locomotive ever made, and certainly a contender for the Worlds Most Famous Locomotive, the Big Boy was forged under some of the most strenuous demands ever placed on a locomotive.
These hoppers were everywhere on the railroads - at their peak they made up about 6% of all open hoppers, and approximately 1.5% of the entire North American freight car fleet. The first of these cars appeared in the late 1930's, and several were still in service in the 1980's!
