In order to modernize its passenger car fleet more quickly, the DR decided to equip existing two- and three-axle state railroad cars with new bodies. Starting in 1959, the first cars designated as Reko cars were in service and soon formed the backbone of the DR´s passenger service. They could be found on all lines, with trains of up to 10 cars running on main lines.
