Note: the designation HSS for this group of tools comes from the drilling material used. High-speed steel (HSS) is a high-alloy tool steel which is wear-resistant and dimensionally stable up to approx. 600°C due to its manufacturing process.
When machining steel, cutting oil or coolant emulsion should be used as a cooling lubricant. Methylated spirits or petroleum are used with aluminium; plastic and wood can usually be processed dry.
