Novelty 2023: The DB IC coaches as a completely new design by PIKO on a scale of 1:160. The pioneering concept of the IC `79 was introduced by the Bundesbahn at the beginning of the summer timetable in 1979 with the well-known slogan "Every hour, every class". This new approach became necessary because the purely first-class Intercitys were hardly economical to operate at that time due to the continuing decline in passenger numbers. With the introduction of the second coach class, the frequency was simultaneously raised to an hourly rhythm. The intended shortening of travel times was achieved through the expansion of many routes and the increase in maximum speeds. To further save time, these accelerated trains no longer carried luggage and mail carriages and were divided into 1st class, dining car and 2nd class blocks for quick transfers at hub stations. Following the success of the concept, the IC network was expanded from four to five lines in 1985. To this day, the IC is an important backbone of long-distance rail transport.
