In 1960, the DR began modernizing old express train cars from the pre-war period to meet the increased demands of passengers. New car bodies were built on the intact frames of old express train cars. The bodies were modern welded constructions and the transitions already had rubber beads. The cars were immediately put into urban express service and inter-zone service in the FRG. Especially the still existing apron, which was omitted during further conversions, gave the cars a very elegant and streamlined appearance.
