This Bachmann HO Scale Silver Series 40' Wood Reefer is based on cars used in the steam and classic-diesel eras. Refrigerated Boxcars (also known as Reefer Cars) are specially designed freight cars used to carry perishable goods at specific temperatures. Early wooden reefers gained popularity shortly after the Civil War and continued in service through the 1940s when they were replaced by steel-bodied reefers. The Bachmann 40' Wood-Side Reefer replicates cars in service from the early 1900s. Today, examples can typically be found in museums and operating on photo freights with tourist railroads. The 40' Wood Reefer features an injection-molded body, finely applied decoration, blackened metal wheels for operation on Code 70 and larger rail; and E-Z Mate(R) magnetic knuckle couplers.
