This Kato EMD SD70ACU is based on units remanufactured from SD90MAC models. n many ways, the SD70ACU is a modified SD90MAC. The SD90MAC struggled to find a place on US and Canadian Railroads in the 1990s. While Union Pacific and CP purchased many of these engines - other railroads felt alienated from the gigantic prime movers which limited the SD90MAC′s operational use. In 2016 Norfolk Southern decided to convert several SD90MACs to SD70ACUs, the Siemens tech was swapped with Mitsubishi components and the cab was replaced with a SD70ACe-style cab. CP decided to rebuild its SD90MACs and reached out to Progress Rail to take on the project. 60 SD70ACUs were delivered in 2019. This Kato model has been designed with road-specific details, these models feature appropriate headlight placements - nose-mounted headlights for CP and cab-mounted headlights for NS. This ready-to-run, standard DC diesel features a powerful five-pole motor with dual flywheels, directional LED headlights, highly detailed body, great decoration and Kato knuckle couplers. The models feature a DCC-friendly mechanism for easy drop-in of a DCC decoder when you′re ready. This EMD SD70ACU is one of many Kato N Scale locomotives.
